How much battery storage do you need in an off-grid property?
First thing’s first: it depends!
- How much or little power will you be using after dark?
- How much or little power will you need on a cloudy day?
- Will you be living there year round, or just in summer?
- What’s your budget?
Now, I don’t have an off-grid property yet.
Yet.
But it’s going to happen. This blog is me planing for the day. It’s just a matter of time and, let’s be real, money.
Because batteries are expensive. I see a lot of people on Facebook groups saying how you don’t need solar batteries anymore if you’re grid-tied. But…I’ve spoken to a few solar installers, and if you’re using an electric car charger, or powering ACs and ovens after dark, you will never get your bills towards €0.
So what about when you can’t rely on the grid?
Everyone talks about solar panels like they’re the big-ticket item. But nope. The real cost, the thing that separates the dreamers from the doers, is energy storage.
Every time I check the prices, I wince.
A 10kW solar array? That’s already going to set me back somewhere in the range of €10,000 to €15,000, depending on the panels I go for.
Not cheap, but manageable.
Then come the batteries. That’s where things start getting ugly.
For a fully functional off-grid home—AC, fridge, hot water, computers, TV, maybe an oven if I’m feeling ambitious—I’m looking at around 30 kWh of daily usage. And because I don’t plan on sitting in the dark if we hit a cloudy week, I need at least two days’ worth of stored energy.
That means around 60 kWh of battery capacity.
And lithium-ion? That’s the gold standard. Which means a gold-standard price tag.
Depending on the brand, I’m looking at anywhere between €500 to €800 per kWh. Multiply that by 60 kWh and—deep breath—we’re talking €30,000 to €48,000 just on batteries.

I’m trying to scare anyone away. Sure I could just reduce my usage. But it’s likely I am going to be using ovens, AC and an electric car charger in my off-grid property.
What are the alternatives?
Lead-acid would be cheaper upfront, but they die faster and need more maintenance. Saltwater batteries are an option, but the technology still feels experimental, and I don’t want to be anyone’s guinea pig when my lights are on the line.
And the inverter? Forgot about that. Need one of those too. Maybe €3,000 to €5,000 depending on the setup.
This stuff adds up fast.
So, for now, I’m budgeting. Watching prices. Maybe waiting for a breakthrough, maybe just waiting for my bank account to catch up.
In the meantime, I find myself lurking on off-grid forums, watching people post pictures of their setups. Some guy in Portugal showing off his DIY battery bank. A couple in the Alps, fully self-sufficient, snowed in for months at a time but perfectly content.
It’s inspiring. And a little frustrating.
Because I know I’ll get there. Just not yet.
But when I finally make the leap? My batteries will be the real MVPs.
Because without them? My solar panels are just shiny rooftop decorations after dark.
